CJ Trade sealed; Bolts acquire Belo for Amer

MANILA, Philippines, February 3 ------ PBA teams looking to shore up their rosters are cranking it up in the trade market. San Miguel Beer officially acquired CJ Perez from Terrafirma yesterday as it got the PBA’s go-signal for the deal that’s been the talk of the town the last four days. Originally, the Beermen were supposed to ship role players Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, Russel Escoto and Gelo Alolino plus SMB’s Season 46 first-round pick in exchange for the prolific Perez. But the PBA’s trade committee made the Beermen add one more item to the package – their Round 1 rights in the 2022 draft – before giving its stamp of approval.

As this developed, the Meralco Bolts and the Blackwater Bossing also made their move. The two agreed to a one-on-one swap between Meralco guard Baser Amer and Blackwater forward Mac Belo as confirmed by Bolts manager Paolo Trillo. The proposed deal is now being evaluated by the pro league. Belo, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 special draft, is expected to reinforce the Meralco frontline that includes Raymond Almazan, Cliff Hodge and Reynel Hugnatan. Amer, who’s drafted in the first round by Meralco in 2015, joins Mike Tolomia, Roi Sumang and Ed Daquioag in Blackwater’s backcourt.

Meanwhile, Dyip coach Johnedel Cardel welcomed the new additions to new-look Terrafirma. “Getting tall players and the No. 8 pick in this year’s draft will be a big boost to us. Plus we have an additional pick for next year,” Cardel told The STAR. Cardel expects the team to benefit from Alolino, a big guard, Rosser, a long-limbed player who can play 1, 2 and 3 positions, and Escoto, a 6-foot-6 slotman who can also shoot from the perimeter. The Dyip also anticipate acquiring two blue-chip rookies from their first-round choices in the Rookie Draft. The squad, which won only one game in the Philippine Cup, owns the rights for the No. 1 pick overall, in addition to SMB’s No. 8. “We’re confident we can form a competitive team,” said Cardel.

Perez, the 2019 Rookie of the Year winner, will join forces with comebacking June Mar Fajardo and Terrence Romeo and veterans Chris Ross, Alex Cabagnot and Arwind Santos over at loaded San Miguel.
