May 17 ------ A strong start for Carlos Yulo in day 1 of the 17th Junior & 11th Senior Men Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
After performing 6 of the apparatus—Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars, and Horizontal Bar—Yulo leads the men's all around with 84.931 points. Yulo is part of Subdivision 2, and has to wait for the results of Subdivision 3 in order to determine if he will be able to keep his number 1 standing.
Currently in 2nd place is Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan with 84.632 points, and in 3rd is Dehang Yin of China with 82.063 points. In the 2023 edition of the tournament in Singapore, Yulo dominated the Floor Exercise, Vault, and Parallel Bars. He got silver in all-around and a bronze in the Horizontal Bar. Similarly, in Doha in 2022, Yulo bagged the gold in the same 3 apparatus, and the silver in the all-around. Aside from Yulo, other senior members of Team Philippines also participated in the competition: team captain Justine Ace De Leon, Miguel Besana, John Ivan Cruz, and John Romeo Santillan.
Carlos' younger brother, Eldrew Yulo, will be competing Saturday in the junior division qualifiers.
