Calvin Abueva to miss start of PBA season after hemorrhoids removal

MANILA, Philippines, October 26 ------ Magnolia forward Calvin Abueva will miss the start of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup as he recovers from a surgery to remove hemorrhoids. Abueva said, that he needs to sit out for a month before he suits up for the Hotshots in the season-opening conference that tips off on November 5. “It has been a month, but my condition has yet to be stable. Hopefully, I’ll have a fast recovery so I can return to practice,” said Abueva in Filipino during the PBA Media Day at the One Esplanade in Pasay.

Abueva said he developed hemorrhoids even before he got tapped for Gilas Pilipinas’ original 12-man lineup for the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in September. The Asian Games stint, though, fell through as organizers denied the inclusion of Abueva, Terrence Romeo, Mo Tautuaa, and Jason Perkins since they were not included in the initial list of pool players. His condition worsening, Abueva decided to undergo hemorrhoidectomy.

Although bummed by his exclusion as the Philippines captured the Asian Games men’s basketball crown for the first time in 61 years, the two-time Best Player of the Conference tried to put things into perspective. “I missed out on the gold, but health is my priority,” said Abueva.

Abueva said he has a lot of catching up to do as he is still unable to jump and lift weights, rating his recovery at 70 percent. The 35-year-old is expected to miss one-third of the Hotshots’ schedule, with Magnolia playing four games in the month of November, starting with its opening-day contest against TNT at the Araneta Coliseum.
