December 22 ------ CALVIN Abueva has yet to see action for Magnolia this season, but the team has strongly signified that he remains an integral part of the franchise moving forward. ‘The Beast’ was signed to a new, three-year contract by the Hotshots despite still being inactive in the ongoing PBA Commissioner’s Cup after undergoing surgery to remove hemorrhoids.
Abueva signed the deal on Wednesday night during the Magnolia-Terrafirma game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and was joined by Hotshots team manager Alvin Patrimonio and his representative Danny Espiritu. The 35-year-old power forward is in his third season with the Purefoods franchise after being acquired in a blockbuster trade with Phoenix in exchange for Chris Banchero and a pair of rookie picks back in 2021.
He helped Magnolia reach the Philippine Cup Finals in his first conference with the team, but lost to TNT Tropang Giga in five games. Nonetheless, Abueva was named the Best Player of the Conference. The former NCAA MVP out of San Sebastian was projected to return in early December, but was further delayed when he suffered a strained calf muscle.
