Caloy Yulo places eighth in all-around in world championships


CARLOS Yulo finished in eighth place in the men’s all-around of the 51st FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Liverpool, England.


Yulo garnered 82.098 in all six apparatuses to fall well short of a podium finish. Olympic champion Daiki Hashimoto took the gold medal with a score of 87.198 followed by Zhang Boheng of China with 86.785 and Wataru Tanigawa of Japan with 85.231. It was still a respectable showing for Yulo, who was actually aiming to break into the top eight in the men’s all-around after competing in all events.


Yulo topped the floor exercise and the parallel bars with similar scores of 15.166. He also placed sixth in the rings with 13.800.


The Filipino Olympian wound up 15th among the 24 finalists in the vault with a score of 14.166, down from the 14.849 he displayed in the qualifiers.


He was 19th in the pommel horse with 11.900 and 22nd in the horizontal bar with a similar score.


Yulo will vie for a gold in the apparatus final starting with his pet event of floor on Saturday at 1:34 p.m. 9:34 p.m., Manila time). The vault and parallel bars, where Yulo also qualified, will have the medal rounds on Sunday.
