March 21 ------ Upholding an advocacy that is close to her heart, Kapuso actress Bianca Umali continues to empower her fellow women by bringing access to essential healthcare services closer to them.
In her recent Instagram post, the 25-year-old actress delightedly shared clips of an event she organized at Barangay Looc in Cardona town in Rizal, where at least 100 women, mostly composed of "Tinapa" (smoked fish) vendors and producers, acquired free Pap smear and breast examination tests. "Ano ang layunin? Ang paigtingin ang pagpapahalaga sa kalusugan at medikal na mga pangangailangan ng mga kababaihan," she said, stressing on the importance of putting women's health as a top priority.
As an advocate of women empowerment, Bianca considered this annual tradition of hers as a way of paying tribute to the dedication of Filipino women."Saludo ako sa mga babaeng Pilipino! Dahil kahit mahirap ay patuloy at patas tayong lumalaban sa buhay. Babae tayo, hindi babae lang," she said. But aside from celebrating womanhood during this Women's Month, the breast cancer awareness advocacy holds a special place in her life, as she lost her mom to the disease when she was five.
In 2023, the award-winning actress took to Instagram to share her own story that would eventually lead her to create more initiatives that uplift women. "I do not want another little girl or another woman to lose her mother to breast cancer or to go through the disease herself without any knowledge, awareness and hope," she said in an Instagram post, explaining why she has been very passionate in championing this cause. In the same year, she collaborated with The Medical City as they launched a three-part video series entitled Babae sa Babae, in hopes to spark and louden conversations about breast cancer awareness among women.
In the video series, the award-winning artist talked about what she went through as a kid: "I felt I was robbed of the last moment I could have had with my mom." Just like many artists, Bianca started out as a commercial model as a child until she was able to build her own name. She has been in the industry for 15 years now under the GMA Network.
