March 22 ------ The Bureau of Immigration (BI) launched the country’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) to enhance national security through digital advancements.
BI APIS Operations Center (APOC) chief and deputy spokesperson Melvin Mabulac said the system allows the bureau to screen passengers in advance, improving risk assessment and expediting the processing of legitimate travelers. He said the initiative is backed by the United Nations (UN) Office of Counter-Terrorism, which has sponsored the UN API goTravel software for this project.
The BI has begun pilot testing with major airlines, with Cebu Pacific becoming the first carrier to fully integrate its system with APIS. Philippine Airlines (PAL) and other air carriers are set to follow as part of the ongoing trials. The data collected so far has already proven useful in trend analysis and passenger risk assessment.
The BI has also successfully conducted connectivity tests with Interpol’s I-24/7 database, ensuring access to global security watchlists for enhanced monitoring. “This initiative marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to modernize immigration processes. With APIS, we are not only strengthening security but also ensuring a more efficient and hassle-free experience for travelers,” BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said.
