Another phreatic eruption occurs at Bulusan Volcano

Metro Manila, June 13 ------ Another phreatic eruption occurred at Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The volcano remains under Alert Level 1 following the eruption that occurred at 3:37 a.m. According to state seismologists, the eruption lasted 18 minutes based on seismic record but the plume was not visible in camera monitors. In an advisory, Phivolcs said the explosion was felt at Intensity III by residents of barangays Añog and Juban, and at Intensity II in Inlagadian and Casiguran. Outgoing Sorsogon Governor Francis Escudero said several barangays in the towns of Juban, Casiguran and Magallanes reported ashfall in their areas. According to the Juban Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, ashfall was reported in the barangays of Anog, Puting Sapa, Bacolod, Buraburan, Catanusan, Calateo, Rangas, Sipaya, and Aroroy. Wind-drifted ash was also reported in Sorsogon City and Palanas, Pilar in Sorsogon province, and as far as Anislag, Daraga in Albay, some 50 kilometers northwest of Bulusan.

The Phivolcs warned local government units near the volcano to avoid entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone. “Furthermore, people living within valleys and along river/stream channels especially on the southeast, southwest and northwest sector of the edifice should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall should phreatic eruption occur,” Phivolcs added. Mount Bulusan also erupted last June 5. Phivolcs earlier warned of another phreatic eruption due to increased seismic activity at the volcano. The agency reported that 178 volcanic earthquakes occurred in the past 24 hours.
