Angel Otom places sixth in Paralympics 50m backstroke final

September 4 ------ ANGEL Otom placed sixth in the women’s 50m backstroke S5 of the 2024 Paralympics at the Paris La Defense Arena. Otom clocked 44.00 seconds and had a respectable showing in her first Paralympic Games where she had a shot at third place early in the race only for the other para swimmers to catch up in the final stretch.

China swept the podium with Lu Dong winning the gold with a time of 37.51 seconds, followed by He Shenggao (39.93) and Liu Yu (42.37). Sumeyye Boyaci of Turkey came in at fourth with a time of 42.37, with Tully Kearney of Great Britain at fifth with 43.40. The 21-year-old Otom’s time in the final was slightly faster than her 44.03 clocking in the heats where she placed seventh among the last eight para swimmers.

Otom will still be competing in the women’s 50m butterfly S5 on Friday.
