July 22 ------ ANDY Gemao had 29 points and 12 rebounds as Gilas Pilipinas Youth clinched the FIBA U18 Asia Cup SEABA (South East Asia Basketball Association) qualifiers title with an 87-64 triumph over Indonesia at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Gemao actually flirted with a triple-double, also tallying eight assists to set the tone for Gilas Youth in re-asserting their mastery over the region. The Philippines already sealed its ticket to the FIBA U18 Asia Cup prior to the match, but wanted another feat to end the tournament in the battle of undefeated teams.
Gemao, the former NCAA Finals MVP for Letran who now plays in the US with Veritas Academy, already had 12 points at the end of the first quarter for a 22-9 lead, before the Filipinos pushed harder on the pedal to outscore Indonesia, 21-9, in the second period. Wilham Cabonilas had 16 points and nine rebounds, while Earl Medina added 14 points for Gilas Youth, who swept all three games in the tournament.
The Philippines won all its assignments in runaway fashion, defeating Malaysia, 97-71, last Friday then Thailand, 87-53, last Saturday. The FIBA U18 Asia Cup is slated from September 2 to 7 in Amman, Jordan.
