All-female Ukrainian air defense unit protects airspace above Bucha

August 6 ------ Tetiana, a former tour guide, had no lack of motivation to join an all-female air defense unit ‘Bucha Whiches’, part of Ukrainian military volunteer formation of Bucha territorial community. “My husband and husband’s brother were killed. My property is destroyed. My mother got sick and couldn’t take it all and died too,” said Tetiana as she participated in unit exercises.

Tetiana is one of the dozens female volunteers who joined military volunteer formation of Bucha territorial community to replace the men who were drafted to serve in the Armed Forces. It was the first training day for Olena, a mother of two and a former teacher. “I don’t want anything to fall on my kids’ heads. I have to control this process,” she said clutching to her assault rifle. Military volunteer formation of Bucha territorial community is not a military service and is supported by local authorities. It’s main tasks are supporting police and air defense.

The Ukrainian town of Bucha saw widespread devastation during a month-long occupation by the Russian forces in 2022. Dozens of bodies were found dead in the streets of Bucha after the Russian army withdrew in March 2022. Bucha lies 37 km (23 miles) northwest of Kyiv. - Report from Reuters
