MANILA, November 27 ------ The Philippines remained unbeaten in Pool B of the Billie Jean King Cup Group III in Bahrain after a dominant win against Qatar. Filipina tennis star Alex Eala punctuated their triumph with a 6-0, 6-0 demolition of Mubaraka Al-Naili.
Shaira Hope Rivera had set the tone in the first singles match, coming through with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Hind Al-Mudakha. Marian Jade Capadocia and Khim Iglupas then won their doubles with 6-3, 6-0. The Philippines improved to 6-0 after the sweep against Qatar.
On Monday, they had cruised to victory against Guam, with Capadocia sweeping Leila Mercado, 6-0, 6-0, and Eala also handing her opponent, Fremont Gibson, a double bagel. For the doubles match, Iglupas and Rivera emerged victorious, 6-0, 6-1, to boost the Philippines in the lead for Group III Pool B. The team, coached by former Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Denise Dy, will next take on Nepal in the group stage.
