February 5 ------ ALEX Eala’s bid for a singles title in India came to an abrupt end on Saturday after she stumbled in the semifinals of the W50 Indore against Russian foe Polina Kudermetova, 4-6, 7-6(5), 2-6. Eala, the third-seed in the tournament, lost steam in the winner-take-all third set after surviving via tiebreak in the second set.
The 18-year-old found her back against the wall in the second set, staving off two match points before forcing the tiebreak which she won. The 20-year-old Russian was serving for the match when Eala came alive to force the tiebreak.
Eala, however, lost the first three games in the deciding set. Although she managed to get to within, 2-3, Kudermetova won the next three games to eliminate the Filipina. It marked the second time Eala reached the semifinals in as many weeks.
