After back-to-back medals, EJ Obiena falls to 7th in Germany meet

MANILA, Philippines, February 11 ------ Consistency is one thing EJ Obiena looks to build on as he placed second to last in his latest meet. Coming off back-to-back podium finishes in his first two events of the year, the Filipino pole vault star landed at seventh in the ISTAF Indoor Dusseldorf in Germany.

Obiena committed just one successful clearance as he leapt past 5.55m in one attempt before he committed three fouls at 5.75m. “Not how I wanted it to go. Made one bar and sums up the whole competition. Taking the positives and the lessons to the next one,” Obiena wrote on his social media accounts. Back in action after a spine injury cut his 2024 season short, Obiena opened 2025 by snagging silver when he cleared 5.65m in the International Springer-Meeting Cottbus in Germany in January. He then captured his first gold in eight months as he recorded a season-best 5.70m in the Meeting Metz Moselle Athlelor in France on Saturday.

Obiena started his Dusseldorf run on the right foot by needing just one try to hurdle 5.55m but bowed out at 5.75m after skipping 5.65m and 5.70m. Germany’s Torben Blech struck gold with 5.80m, while the USA’s Chris Nilsen and Turkey’s Ersu Sasma, who both registered 5.70m, bagged silver and bronze, respectively. The Asian record holder, Obiena is quick to move on. “We keep moving forward,” he said.
