AFP completes peaceful resupply mission in Ayungin Shoal

MANILA, Philippines, March 6 ------ The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) completed a resupply mission for personnel of the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal without incident. AFP Public Affairs Office Chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad said the delivery of supplies and fresh deployment of troops was done without interference from the Chinese Coast Guard.

Tuesday's resupply mission was the second this year. "This RORE was executed in close coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard and was completed with no untoward incident," Trinidad said. The Western Command base in Palawan had commissioned a civilian boat, M/V Lapu-Lapu, to ferry all the supplies required by the troops. "While en route to BRP Sierra Madre, we have tracked and monitored several Chinese vessels in the general area. Despite the presence of these foreign vessels, the entire operation was completed without confrontation or untoward incident," Trinidad said.

The resupply mission in Ayungin, Trinidad said, is a resolute commitment of the AFP in maintaining its presence and operational readiness in the WPS. BRP Sierra Madre was deliberately grounded in the shallow waters in Ayungin Shoal in 1999.
