5 dams in Luzon release water

MANILA, Philippines, October 25 ------ At least five major dams in Luzon released water as they were close to their spilling levels following continuous rain from Severe Tropical Storm "Kristine."

Nathaniel Servando, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Administrator told The Manila Times on Thursday that they have to open the control gates of Ipo Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan; Ambuklao and Binga in Benguet; San Roque in Pangasinan and Magat in Isabela. As of 8 a.m., Thursday, Pagasa's hydrology division said Ipo's reservoir water level (RWL) was at 100.79 m or -0.31 meters short of its normal high water level (NHWL) of 101.10 m or its spilling level.

The Ambuklao dam in Bokod, Benguet has a 749.20-m RWL or -2.80 m less than its normal water level of 752 m, the state-run weather agency said. The Binga Dam in Itogon, Benguet has been releasing rainwater through its two gates. The dam's RWL registered at 570.83 m. Its NHWL is 575 m. Pagasa said one gate was also opened at San Roque Dam in Pangasinan province as its reservoir water level had already reached 275.79 m against its NHWL of 280 m.

Magat recorded a 182.1-m RWL. Its normal water level is 193 m. Angat Dam, the main source of water for Metro Manila and for irrigation in its adjoining provinces, measured 198.45 m, still far from its spilling level of 210 m. Servando said it was normal for Pagasa to release water from the dams before they reach spilling level during the wet season to avoid an overflow that could damage affected villages.
