3 PH duathletes earn berths in World Games

February 24 ------ Three duathletes recently booked themselves berths to the 2025 World Games slated in Chengdu, China in August. Top PH duathlete Merry Joy Trupa, Southeast Asian Games triathlon champion Kim Mangrobang and international meet newcomer Franklin Yee were the latest qualifiers to the said events following their performances in the recent race.

Ranked No. 83 in the world, Trupa bagged the runner-up honors in the Asia Triathlon-Duathlon Championships in Manama, Bahrain over the weekend with a time of 1 hour, 29 minutes and 16 seconds, while Mangrobang finished third in 1:33:14. The PH duo finished behind eventual winner Chinese Lu Ziqing, who clocked 52 seconds ahead of Trupa.

Yee, for his part, finished fifth in the men’s side, but it was enough to gain one of the four slots available for the said Games. “The Philippine Sports Commission’s support to the national team paid off handsomely,” said Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) president Tom Carrasco. With their qualification, TRAP hopes to send them to training abroad.

Trupa, Mangrobang and Yee also joined early World Games qualifiers Rubilen Amit in billiards, the men’s national floorball team, Hergie Bacyadan in kickboxing, and wushu specialists Carlos Baylon Jr., Thornton Quieney Sayan, and Agatha Wong.
