Guiao admits no knowledge of plan to bring in Clarkson for Asiad

August 10 ------ IF it’s just up to coach Yeng Guiao, one spot open in the Asian Games-bound Philippine team can be left open for Jordan Clarkson if the Cleveland Cavaliers' Fil-American guard is truly available for the campaign. “Sa akin, okay lang if theres a possibility,” he said on Thursday after wrapping up his fourth practice session. “Kung wala namang possibility, bakit ka magiiwan ng isang slot? But if there's any possibility, I think it’s worth the risk.” Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio said they are "moving heaven and earth" to get Clarkson to wear the national tri-colors as part of the hastily assembled team for the Indonesia showcase.

Guiao, though, admitted that he hasn’t heard anything yet about Clarkson’s situation and that he still needs to sit down with the SBP officials. “That is another thing that I will need to discuss with SBP officials. Kailangan ba naming mag-reserve ng isang slot para sa kanya o hindi? I don’t know the answer to that yet. Maybe I'll know tomorrow. Kung magre-reserve ng isang slot, then baka almost tapos na yung lineup kung ganun,” he said. “Of course, I hope he's there. Pero wala akong balita. Di ko pa alam yung situation doon.” Outside of Clarkson’s availability, Guiao said he already has an idea on who his final two players for the Philippine team will be. “Meron na akong idea, pero sa atin, we still need to consult the coaching staff and the SBP officials for the final lineup,” he said.

Guiao has already bared 10 names as shoo-ins for his 12-man roster, namely Magnolia slasher Paul Lee, GlobalPort guard Stanley Pringle, San Miguel center Christian Standhardinger, Blackwater slotman JP Erram, and the Rain or Shine core of James Yap, Chris Tiu, Gabe Norwood, Raymond Almazan, Beau Belga, and Maverick Ahanmisi to his team. That leaves two more positions up for grabs, with Clarkson, NLEX center Asi Taulava, TNT swingman Don Trollano, and cadets Kobe Paras and Ricci Rivero still in the running. Guiao is scheduled to bare his roster on Friday evening. “Malapit na. Nandoon na tayo sa dulo. One or two people are being considered na lang. Ayoko namang mai-reveal na ngayon. Wala nang thrill bukas,” he said.
