Palace: Duterte to consult econ team on proposed 14th month pay

August 10 ------ Malacañang on Thursday underscored the need to study the bill seeking to mandate employers to give their rank-and-file employees 14th month pay. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said President Rodrigo Duterte has yet to articulate his position on Senate Bill 2, which has been pending in the Senate labor committee since July 2016. "Unfortunately I can only speak on behalf of the President and the President has not given me any indication on his position on the matter," Roque told reporters. "I'm sure he will consult again his economic team and we will communicate with you the position of the President on the proposed 14th month pay," he added.

The Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) cited Sotto's concern at "inability of workers to cope with rising prices of basic commodities and soaring costs of services" by pushing for the bill's passage. Under the bill, rank-and-file employees regardless of their employment status, designation, and irrespective of the method by which their wages are paid provided that they have worked at least one month during the calendar year are entitled to 14th month pay. It states that the 13th month pay shall be paid not later than June 14th and the 14th month pay shall be paid not later than December 24th every year. It added that the minimum amount of the 14th month pay shall not be less than the monthly basic salary earned by the employee.
